Digital transformation for micro-oilfield operators
Delivering analytics and visualisation to create value and reduce data overwhelm
Challenge: Approximately 9,000 micro-oilfield producers in the USA operate an average of 10-15 wells, some even only own one well. “Pumpers” are hired to go check on the wells, but they cannot possibly reach all of them every day, which can lead to missed pump-off events and lost production.
One operator approached Eigen to try a different strategy based on incremental value-based digitalisation for each well.
In the past, the operator collected all data in Excel with daily uploads of oil and water production, as well as pump-off periods, when the pump shuts off and the well stops producing. Without remote monitoring, any number of wells can shutdown, and remain unproductive without the operator knowing, leading to lost revenue.
With oil production, water and pump data added every day for each well, the operator had become overwhelmed. Engineers could not easily get a sense of performance over time, without building bespoke analyses and custom reports in Excel, that quickly became unusable and out of date.
Our client challenged us to combine value-driven well level automation, with Eigen’s analytics and visualisation package, Ingenuity, with the aim of pre-processing and visualising performance data of dozens of wells on a continuous basis.
Solution: Eigen’s Ingenuity presented the perfect solution for the operator, owing to its rapid ingestion of data via one of several dozen pre-built data connectors.
New data is imported to Ingenuity each day, enabling engineers to visualise the latest performance for each well – water, oil, pump-off, watercut and associated downtime – on intuitive charts, which can be exported and shared with team members.
The data can also be aggregated at weekly and monthly level to track trends over time to spot anomalies.
Future plans include uploading the data to the cloud and driving the Ingenuity analytics and visualisation features in real time.
Impact: From a situation of overwhelm, the operator now feels more in control of its data, able to focus attention on abnormal shut-downs, areas of challenge or opportunity.
Hours a week of engineering time is saved as the latest data is now available 24/7, presented in beautiful dashboards that can be shared with managers and service companies when planning activity.
