Oil and gas offshore brownfield operator
A single PI solution has provided the operator with an enhanced level of control and performance management of its portfolio.
Problem
The operator had inherited multiple PI data systems through a series of asset portfolio acquisitions, each one designed and managed by different operators, with different standards and approaches. The operator’s engineering and operations teams were wasting hundreds of hours a month synchronising and integrating data in an effort to understand the operational picture.
An internal team had been assigned to try to organise the data by creating a new integrated PI AF structure, but had struggled due to a lack of specialist capability.
Solution:
Eigen was asked to build a standardised hierarchical structure to organise and optimise data integration and visualisation across multiple systems to improve facility monitoring.
Using PI-AF as a common structure, we built four hierarchical levels of display:
- Organisation i.e. company-wide
- Facility e.g. an offshore platform
- System e.g. Gas Compression
- Equipment e.g. a single turbo-compressor or vessel.
For the Equipment level we were able to apply a high degree of templating to standardise definitions and visualisation.
In some cases, for a single piece of equipment, the variables were incredibly complex and required Eigen’s deep processing engineering capabilities.
The standardised, hierarchical nature of our solution meant were able to apply different indicators at each level to signify deviation from plan, e.g. indicators for Condition Monitoring (CM in red, amber or green), System Monitoring (SM) and Performance Monitoring (PM). These standard status labels enabled engineers to quickly identify problem areas and prioritise where to focus their investigations.
In addition, by working closely with the engineers who use the PI systems on a daily basis, we identified specific high value use-cases that would drive step-change productivity improvements.
In these examples we were able to deliver in-situ calculations alongside the data, with customised graphing, savings hours of engineering time, downloading data and producing the same results in Excel.
Impact:
A single PI solution and visual standard across multiple assets has provided the operator with an enhanced level of control and performance management of its portfolio. With surveillance by exception now the modus operandi, and in-built calculations, graphic visualisations and standard templating, engineering time is freed up to focus on higher value activities and where their interventions have most impact.
