Simplifying Routing Valve Tracking with Ingenuity Shift Log
A customer needed a more effective way to track routing valve movements.
Problem: A customer needed a more effective way to track routing valve movements across its processing operation, specifically to keep track of which hydrocyclones were processing the water from the different oil/water separators.
Two separators could be routed to six different hydrocyclones via manually operated valves, with operators recording each status change by hand. This manual process was time-consuming, prone to inconsistencies, and made it difficult to maintain an accurate record of current and historical routing configurations.
The team wanted a solution that would not only improve record-keeping but also provide greater operational visibility and reduce the potential for human error.
Solution: Working closely with our customer, Eigen first moved the process into the Ingenuity Shift Log, allowing operators to capture routing valve status changes through structured logbook forms.
Building on this foundation, Eigen developed a new dashboard-driven workflow that enables users to both visualise and record hydrocyclone routing valve movements from a single interface.
The dashboard combines:
- Interactive process graphics showing separators and hydrocyclones
- Real-time routing status indicators driven directly from shift log data
- Historical trending charts for operational analysis
- Traffic-light visualisations for at-a-glance monitoring of routing status
- Configurable input controls for recording routing changes
Operators can select the relevant hydrocyclone destinations from dropdown menus and submit updates directly from the dashboard. Entries can be logged against the current time or backfilled with historical timestamps when required.
Impact: The new workflow delivers immediate operational visibility while simplifying data entry and record keeping.
When a user submits an update, the dashboard automatically refreshes to display the latest routing status, ensuring all users have access to consistent and up-to-date information. Historical trends remain available for analysis, helping teams understand how routing configurations have changed over time.
By replacing free-text logging with structured (dropdown) inputs, the solution significantly reduces the risk of human error while improving data quality and traceability.
Technical Highlights
The solution leverages Ingenuity’s configurable page variables to create a flexible framework for capturing operational events. These variables drive dashboard controls, populate dropdown selections, and automatically generate structured shift log entries.
Because the system is fully configurable, the same approach can be applied to a wide range of operational tracking and event-management use cases beyond routing valve tracking.
By combining dashboard visualisation with direct shift log integration, Eigen delivered a streamlined solution that makes operational tracking easier, more accurate, and more valuable for decision-making.
Benefits:
Reduced manual data entry effort
Improved operational visibility
Real-time status monitoring
Historical trending & analysis
Lower risk of human error
Structured, auditable records
Fully configurable for additional use cases
