Automating Well Test Validation with Prosper
Eigen developed an automated workflow that integrates directly with Prosper
Problem: The best way to validate well models using well production test data is to simulate the well model using the well test results as an input and compare the flowing downhole pressure from the model to the measured DHP from the test.
This comparison validates that the simulation model remains accurate and representative of actual well performance: DHP matching confirms the model correctly captures friction losses (wall shear), acceleration losses (density changes), elevation losses (hydrostatic gradient) and temperature effects on fluid properties.Â
Previously, this process was entirely manual. For every well test, an engineer needed to:Â
- Review the well test results to make sure it is a valid and representative measurement of well production.Â
- Open Prosper.Â
- Enter the required test values into the simulation.Â
- Run the simulation and record the simulated DHP result.Â
- Compare the simulated value against the measured DHP.Â
- Address any differences by updating the Prosper model.Â
As the number of well tests increased, this became a repetitive and time-consuming task. Â
Solution: Eigen developed an automated workflow that integrates directly with Prosper and can also support more complex workflows involving GAP within the same software suite.
The application automatically identifies well tests that have not yet been processed and waits until out-of-hours periods before running simulations. This ensures Prosper licences remain available for users during normal working hours.Â
For each unprocessed well test, the system:Â
- Retrieves the relevant well test data.Â
- Executes the Prosper simulation using the required inputs.Â
- Captures the simulated DHP result.Â
- Stores the result for comparison with the measured DHP value in the Well Test Validation App.Â
The solution also provides visualisation capabilities, including trending charts that display:Â
- Historical measured DHP values.Â
- Historical simulated DHP values.Â
- The difference between measured and simulated results over time.Â
All without any extra software licencing costs.Â
Impact: The solution removes the need for engineers to manually enter well test data into Prosper and run simulations individually for every test automatic almost all the workflow steps and facilitating the work of the engineers when engineering analysis is required, as shown in this table:
By automating the process and running simulations in batches outside normal working hours, the workflow:Â
- Reduces the manual effort required to validate well test results.Â
- Ensures simulations are processed consistently.Â
- Makes efficient use of limited Prosper licences.Â
- Provides a historical view of measured versus simulated DHP performance, helping users monitor simulation accuracy over time.Â
Additionally, by running after hours, the cost required to acquire more Prosper licenses is avoided.Â
