With the recent deployment of the Barrier Status Panel (BSP) on the Jotun FPSO, we are witnessing a significant leap forward in digital safety management.
This new system delivers robust, live-online insights into barrier impairments and risk posture, intelligently pulling together data from across the safety-critical ecosystem. These insights will drive daily decisions and actions to mitigate the risk with maximum impact.
1. A Unified Architecture
At the heart of the BSP’s infrastructure design is centralised data access. Using a single, cloud-based data source, the system integrates:
- A Barrier information database
- SAP Maintenance data
- Synergi Temporary Deviation Permits
This integration is seamless and secure: original systems are not burdened by live queries, preserving performance and data integrity. Instead, data is pre-processed into the cloud, then accessed by the BSP, providing a near real-time view, depending only on refresh intervals.
2. Intelligent Status Calculations and Risk Logic
The panel’s logic isn’t just about data display, it represents a deeply calculated risk picture. Built on a graph-model architecture, it maps real physical assets to logical safety barriers and integrates rules to determine the true status of Barriers and Critical instrumentation, Areas, Integrity Programs and Performance Standards.
It incorporates criticality-weighted calculations, meaning the system doesn’t just report impairments, it prioritises them based on how much they affect safety.
3. Built-In Resilience and SLA Protection
Downtime is no longer a blocker. The BSP stores its own local copy of imported data, ensuring that even if the underlying data sources such as SAP/TIAT/Synergi or even cloud access is temporarily lost, users still see the latest known safety statuses.
This greatly enhances the Service Level Agreement (SLA) of the panel, making it a highly resilient tool during system outages or degraded connectivity.
4. Hierarchical and Contextual Impairment Assessment
The system’s rules respect the hierarchy of data reliability. For example:
- Notifications (M1s) are quick but less precise
- SAP Work Orders provide better detail
- Synergi offer the most accurate impairment data, especially when mitigation actions are recorded
The BSP intelligently overwrites less precise sources with higher-confidence data, improving the accuracy of the final barrier status.
5. Handling the Unknown and the Exceptional
Even when impairments are poorly referenced or tagged, the system captures them under an “Unspecified” category. This ensures that no impairment goes unnoticed, and that they’re flagged clearly for follow-up by operations.
It also prioritises critical impairments, such as explosion-proof or fire protection work orders, giving them consistent high-risk classification and directly linking them to safety-critical systems. This avoids underreporting risk in exceptional cases.
6. From Data to Situational Awareness
All this logic feeds into a powerful operator dashboard, where impairments, statuses, histories, and source data converge into a single view. Operators gain a complete picture of:
- Barrier health by tag/area/integrity program/standard
- Impairment history by tag
- Linked SAP/Synergi cases
- Underlying risk exposure
This is more than visibility — it’s situational awareness at your fingertips. An awareness that will drive the actions required to mitigate the risk with the maximum impact.
A Smarter Safer Future
The Barrier Status Panel for Jotun FPSO is a milestone in offshore process safety. By merging complex data into a streamlined, intelligent tool, it empowers engineers and operators to make faster, more accurate decisions, while ensuring the highest standards of reliability, security, and risk insight.
As we move forward, this platform sets a new benchmark for how digital tools can support and enhance operational safety.
