Joel Chacon
Joel is a Digital Oilfield specialist with more than 30 years experience in the automation of Usptream Oil & Gas processes and operations. After learning to program in an Apple II computer, Joel became a Digital Oilfield pioneer having designed and deployed digital solutions since the early 2000s. Joel has played project/product leadership and programme management roles in PDVSA, Petroleum Experts, Matrikon, Honeywell, BP (seconded to Field of the Future programme) and since 2018 in Eigen where he helps new clients define the solutions they need.

Is your Oil field being exploited at its best?
Subsea Hydraulic Leak Detection
Challenge
If the level of hydraulic fluid usage increases beyond defined threshold it can pose a significant threat to operation of the subsea system. A leak is often the root cause, but detecting the location is challenging, owing to the volume of distribution equipment and connections from platform to the well. If the flanks need to be isolated to locate the leak, production needs to be shut-in.
Solution
Eigen developed dashboards with trends, visual indicators and business logic to detect hydraulic consumption, potential leak size and to help locate the source more precisely. Email alerts were added to provide early warning.
Impact
On 22 August 2018, the system alerted users of a probable leak of hydraulic fluid -this was confirmed and located. The system pointed to the precise flank and circuit where the leak was likely to be located, preventing the shutdown of large parts of the total production. The operator estimated that flank losses between $0.65m-$1.36m were avoided ($70/bbl).

Drilling Portal dramatically improves team efficiency
Challenge
Information on the drilling activities for each rig on hire is held in multiple systems, shared during meetings and via emailed PDFs and spreadsheets. Inbox clutter had become overwhelmingly, with up to 18 different reports emailed per day.
Solution
The Eigen Drilling Portal is a cloud-based web portal that aggregates and displays the latest status information from more than ten different information systems, including Non-Productive Time, time-depth curves, well status.
Impact
Today, the time taken for an engineer to understand the current status on each rig – and performance against plan – has been reduced to about one minute. In addition, teams have fed back increased motivation, as well as a greater sense of collaboration and one-team behaviour.

Automated Blowdown Verification
Challenge
Manual analysis of the depressurisation of >fifty different sections of piping and equipment in a facility after plant shutdown to a senior engineer a week of effort. It involved going into multiple systems to find the right data and manually importing it into spreadsheets.
Solution
Using our Ingenuity platform, we extended the existing data model of the facility with new objects for the blowdown segments and associated equipment and connected this to the systems holding the source data, adding dashboards for visualisation.
Impact
Now blowdown analysis runs automatically after any plant shutdowns, saving a week of a senior engineer’s time and providing improved management information.
