Single intuitive dashboard designed to display key operational risk data

Challenge

Operators employ a multitude of functional systems to keep track of key operational data. This often necessitates switching between windows, which is time-consuming and error-prone, impacting deadlines and quality.

Solution

Eigen Ingenuity can be configured to display a list of entries related to each stakeholder, with a summary of information and links to the exact record in the source functional system. The “My Important Stuff” page was configured to show records from systems relating to risk management, work orders, purchase orders and requisitions.

Impact

Now each Stakeholder can access all key information from one dashboard, keeping the risk management workflow running efficiently. In addition, the stress on users of not being up to date or becoming distracted is drastically reduced.

Automated generation of a weekly plant availability report

Challenge

Creating the weekly plant availability report involved a series repetitive tasks, including extracting real-time production data, adding downtime data and potential, calculating production and plan efficiencies, as well as on-demand and on-stream availabilities, and pasting values and charts into a single report to be emailed to management.

Solution

Using Ingenuity’s digital reporting capability, a template for the weekly availability report was configured to the user’s specification with clean and informative trend lined and bar charts. Today, once per week all an engineer needs to do is enter production deferment figures and the report is generated automatically and emailed with one click.

Impact

The engineer has gained back three hours every week to use the reliability information to analyse improvement opportunities, conduct problem resolution. In addition, the engineer feels more engaged, motivated and valued.

Major Accident Risk Indicators (MARI) process streamlined and centralised

Challenge

One operator we worked with used separate systems to collect and calculate accident risk data, copying and pasting manually into spreadsheets. The situation was error-prone and hugely inefficient.

Solution

Eigen and SAFETEC developed the online MARI cloud native application to collect, analyse and present data, accessible by all users in multiple locations.

Impact

The operator now uses the online MARI tool to log and monitor trends in major accident risks, logged by onshore and offshore staff. Manual transfer of information and potential errors have been eliminated and there is clear visibility of risk trends from anywhere in the world.

Subsea hydraulic system monitoring detects and helps locate subsea leaks

Challenge

If the level of hydraulic fluid usage increases beyond defined threshold it can pose a significant threat to operation of the subsea system. A leak is often the root cause, but detecting the location is challenging, owing to the volume of distribution equipment and connections from platform to the well. If the flanks need to be isolated to locate the leak, production needs to be shut-in.

Solution

Eigen developed dashboards with trends, visual indicators and business logic to detect hydraulic consumption, potential leak size and to help locate the source more precisely. Email alerts were added to provide early warning.

Impact

On 22 August 2018, the system alerted users of a probable leak of hydraulic fluid -this was confirmed and located. The system pointed to the precise flank and circuit where the leak was likely to be located, preventing the shutdown of large parts of the total production. The operator estimated that flank losses between $0.65m-$1.36m were avoided ($70/bbl).

Drilling Portal dramatically improves team efficiency

Challenge

Information on the drilling activities for each rig on hire is held in multiple systems, shared during meetings and via emailed PDFs and spreadsheets. Inbox clutter had become overwhelmingly, with up to 18 different reports emailed per day.

Solution

The Eigen Drilling Portal is a cloud-based web portal that aggregates and displays the latest status information from more than ten different information systems, including Non-Productive Time, time-depth curves, well status.

Impact

Today, the time taken for an engineer to understand the current status on each rig – and performance against plan – has been reduced to about one minute. In addition, teams have fed back increased motivation, as well as a greater sense of collaboration and one-team behaviour.

Infinite possibilities thanks to graph database technology​

Challenge

Coming up with a data model (schema) that is fit for every future use case is impossible. The rigid structures of relational databases make it difficult to change the schema later on so it becomes hard to move quickly to digitise operations. Lengthy business analysis phases are then followed by lengthy contextualisation processes were the data in ingested into a data lake before the user functionality can be delivered.​

Solution

Graph databases such as Neo4j work completely differently and allow information to be linked together just like a person would draw things on a white board. New information and relationships can be continuously added without affecting what has gone before.​

Impact

The data model at the heart of Eigen Ingenuity allows infinite possibilities for linking and modelling data and information. Structures can be imported from spreadsheets and the model can be evolved over time allowing you to take a step-by-step approach to building your Digital Twin.​

Automating verification of blowdown events

Challenge

Manual analysis of the depressurisation of >fifty different sections of piping and equipment in a facility after plant shutdown to a senior engineer a week of effort. It involved going into multiple systems to find the right data and manually importing it into spreadsheets.

Solution

Using our Ingenuity platform, we extended the existing data model of the facility with new objects for the blowdown segments and associated equipment and connected this to the systems holding the source data, adding dashboards for visualisation.

Impact

Now blowdown analysis runs automatically after any plant shutdowns, saving a week of a senior engineer’s time and providing improved management information.

Challenge

Weekly HSE reports were made in Powerpoint and circulated by email. Much of the information was not digital and included 1-page summaries, news items and images.​

Solution

Using the ScreenPresenter module in out Ingenuity Platform we enabled the author to publish the PowerPoint to an online slideshow. The slideshow can also incorporate content from other systems into one seamless loop and can be updated in under a minute. ​

Impact

Inbox clutter has been reduced and made it simple to display the latest HSE information on the TV screens in communal areas. The information can be updated more frequently and there is now much greater awareness across the whole company of HSE, including for visitors.​

Challenge

Finding the necessary information to do a task was time consuming because the information is spread across multiple systems, such as a master Equipment Database, Document Management System, data Historian, Maintenance Management System etc.​

Solution

By creating a data model that links (or contextualises) the information for an asset in Neo4j and combing it with a powerful search tool such as Elastic, users are able to use free text or more specific searches to find the information they need.​

Impact

Using the combination of Search and the Data Model, users are able to find and work with information much faster. On average it is estimated as saving 30mins per user per day, or 1/16th of the working hours in the day – 6.6%.​

Case Studies - Making HSE Information Visible with Eigen
Challenge

The Safety and Environmental Critcal Element (SECE) backlog was reaching unmanageable levels for one operator, with the regulator issuing warnings. Maintenance was planned, but, without a direct link to Major Accident Hazard (MAH) risk, its impact could not be measured – so the operator could not determine if its resources were directed appropriately.

Solution

Working in collaboration with the operator, Eigen designed and deployed an online Barrier Safety Panel solution, enabling the planners to easily identify links between activity, barrier status and cumulative MAH risk. This helped them better prioritise and demonstrate regulatory compliance.

Impact

The SECE backlog was reduced by 90% in three weeks, enabling the offshore team to move from firefighting to proactive planning. The tool enabled measurement of risk level, assuring regulators that the operator had an effective barrier management system, securing its licence to operate.

Challenge

The Operations team wanted a set of live dashboards that would give everyone both onshore and offshore a quick and easy way to find out the status of operations across all assets

Solution

Eigen connected the Ingenuity platform to 9 different systems and designed a set of elegant, interactive dashboards using modern web technologies.

Impact

Within 30 seconds anyone can get an understanding of what is happening offshore. Previously this could take up to 30 minutes. Managers and engineers are able to quickly see what is going on and prioritise work when they get in.

Safety Barrier Health Monitoring

Case Study on Safety Barrier Health Monitoring | Eigen
Challenge

Norway’s PSA and EU Directive 2013/30 and 2004/35 regulations require the management of Barriers to safety and environmental risks.  Var Energy’s  Goliat has over 100k equipment tags and 1,600 barriers. A solution was required to keep on top of essential safety equipment certifications, overdue maintenance and understand the risk associated to barrier degradation in order to achieve a risk-based management of barriers.

Solution

Using our Ingenuity Platform we built a Digital Twin of the Safety Barriers and associated equipment and connected this to the systems with information affecting Barrier Status, including notifications, work orders and ICSS device alerts. The data model incorporated recommendations from SINTEF on how status should be calculated based on criticality and other factors and aggregated up across barrier elements and areas.

Impact

Operations teams now have a realtime, online picture of current Safety Barrier Health which is used to help priorities activities and ensure continued safe operation.  The Norwegian PSA have commended the work and the project won an internal award within Var Energy.

Digitising regular meetings

Challenge

The information capture and report creation for the regular morning and weekly meetings was manual and time consuming , which was an inefficient user senior leaders time.  It required collecting information from different systems and manually typing it into a Word document, plus later creating several versions of this report for different audiences

Solution

Using the Ingenuity Platform we configured an online meeting template that automatically captures the information from different systems for the date selected.  Participants can enter comments (and see the comments from the previous day), and when ready, the chairman can generate and distribute different versions of the report, with different subsets of the content, to different audiences by email, url and/or to the users Mobile Monitor app.

Impact

Morning meetings are much faster and more enjoyable as there is less time spent by the OIM and onshore Production managers entering data.  There is a complete online history of all the reports that those with the right permissions can access.

Well rate estimation & surveillance

Challenge

The daily well rate estimation for an NCS asset was a time consuming manual process involving multiple custom spreadsheets.  It took up too much valuable engineering time, it was hard to understand and open to error.

Solution

We built a digital twin of the wells and related equipment and connected it to the source systems as well as a new source for storing manual inputs.  We then converted the spreadsheets into online, realtime calculations and built a set of input screens and templated dashboards that automated the information capture and sped up the whole process.  We set up alerts and configured access via the Eigen Mobile Monitor app.

Impact

A manually intensive 4 hours process has been reduced to less than 30 minutes and the process runs in realtime and is auditable.  Shared awareness throughout the company has improved.

Performance Monitoring using PI Vision

Challenge

Since 2019, Eigen has been helping the UK’s largest independent E&P Company to monitor their operations using PI Vision displays, linked to a comprehensive PI AF asset model. Their engineers knew what was required but lacked the spare time in-house to set up the system.

Solution

Because of our extensive real time visualisation experience, we quickly understood the requirement and immediately set to work. We built a PI AF Model for 4 assets using templates where possible. We Integrated PI formulas and analytics into the templates and a templated roll up analysis. The result was 200+ PI vision displays, ranging from full process platform overviews to detailed equipment displays.

Impact

Discipline engineers now have much faster access to live information and can provide realtime support to offshore teams without having to access the Control Systems. It is also helping to move towards more proactive operations because engineers are more aware of equipment performance and can act on signs of degradation early.

Challenge

IP21 system update and migration

Challenge

A large installed base of Aspentech IP.21s had to be upgraded to the latest version and migrated to new infrastructure.

Solution

We configured the new infrastructure in parallel and migrated the data and interfaces in a phased way to ensure no loss of history.  We dealt with multiple complexities including custom records and maintaining database IDs to ensure seamless functionality for the users.

Impact

The system is now fully supported and running on the latest secure infrastructure.

Online portal for Drilling Operations

Challenge

Information on drilling activities on each rig on hire is held in multiple different systems and shared mostly via meetings and email attachments as pdfs and spreadsheets.  Inbox clutter was a problem with up to 18 different reports being emailed each day.

Solution

The Eigen Drilling Portal is a cloud-based web portal that displays current information from drilling systems, including productivity (NPT) analysis, Time-Depth curves, well status, supervisors, reports and other related information.  The intelligent email processor that automatically processes the multiple emailed reports and categorises and stores them and adds metadata.  Reports are published to a new mobile app as well as being made available in the portal with intuitive search functionality

Impact

The time needed to understand what is currently happening on each rig and the progress against plan has been reduced to around 1 minute.  The awareness across the organisation has all been increased which has helped foster a feeling of being “one team”.  Email inbox clutter is much reduced with makes work more enjoyable and efficient.
