Assuring Compliance
Monitoring and managing safety barriers and risk status to enable early intervention
We help operators automate the verification of safety related events, seeking to eliminate manual data gathering and manipulation. This not only reduces risk, but also frees up valuable engineering time to focus on analysing data rather than gathering data.

How to make a digital twin of a bow tie
Challenge
Visualising the risk posed by impaired barriers is a complex problem solvable only by combining a graph model of the barrier elements and online connectivity to sources of barrier impairment, and a good mix of ingenuity in putting it all together.
Solutions
How can we automate the verification of safety related events and nearly eliminate manual data gathering and manipulation? Imagine all your Process Enegineer's time is spent in analysing the results rather than gathering data...
Oil and gas experience
- Our track record, particularly in process engineering, gives us a full appreciation of the importance of robust safety and risk management.
- We apply our domain experience to identify where digital technologies supplement and complement existing tools and processes to monitor and manage safety barriers.
Smart technology choices
- Eigen’s Safety Barrier Health Monitoring empowers users to perform effective Barrier Management by capturing all the information necessary to assess the status of all barriers and deliver real time monitoring of barrier impairment and the overall, or per area, risk posture.
- Automated Verification automatically triggers workflows to verify safety related events such as blowdowns, shutdown logic, valve travel time, etc; built on top of Eigen Ingenuity’s knowledge graph and access to relevant data.
How we work
- We leverage Eigen’s process engineering heritage to understand physical systems before identifying how digital technologies can help.
- We have worked closely with regulators over the years and understand their expectations; we build these into our systems to make them as “regulator-ready” as possible.

SECE maintenance backlog dramatically reduced
Challenge
The Safety and Environmental Critcal Element (SECE) backlog was reaching unmanageable levels for one operator, with the regulator issuing warnings. Maintenance was planned, but, without a direct link to Major Accident Hazard (MAH) risk, its impact could not be measured – so the operator could not determine if its resources were directed appropriately.
Solution
Working in collaboration with the operator, Eigen designed and deployed an online Barrier Safety Panel solution, enabling the planners to easily identify links between activity, barrier status and cumulative MAH risk. This helped them better prioritise and demonstrate regulatory compliance.
Impact
The SECE backlog was reduced by 90% in three weeks, enabling the offshore team to move from firefighting to proactive planning. The tool enabled measurement of risk level, assuring regulators that the operator had an effective barrier management system, securing its licence to operate.
Proportion of Safety & Environmental Critical Element maintenance cleared after using three weeks using Eigen’s Safety Barrier Monitoring solution.
Automated Blowdown Verification
Challenge
Manual analysis of the depressurisation of >fifty different sections of piping and equipment in a facility after plant shutdown to a senior engineer a week of effort. It involved going into multiple systems to find the right data and manually importing it into spreadsheets.
Solution
Using our Ingenuity platform, we extended the existing data model of the facility with new objects for the blowdown segments and associated equipment and connected this to the systems holding the source data, adding dashboards for visualisation.
Impact
Now blowdown analysis runs automatically after any plant shutdowns, saving a week of a senior engineer’s time and providing improved management information.
Number of weeks of a senior engineer’s time by automating the verification of blowdown events
Major Accident Risk Indicators (MARI) process streamlined and centralised
Challenge
One operator we worked with used separate systems to collect and calculate accident risk data, copying and pasting manually into spreadsheets. The situation was error-prone and hugely inefficient.
Solution
Eigen and SAFETEC developed the online MARI cloud native application to collect, analyse and present data, accessible by all users in multiple locations.
Impact
The operator now uses the online MARI tool to log and monitor trends in major accident risks, logged by onshore and offshore staff. Manual transfer of information and potential errors have been eliminated and there is clear visibility of risk trends from anywhere in the world.

What is Safety Barrier Health Monitoring?
Eigen’s Safety Barrier Health Monitoring empowers users to perform effective Barrier Management, by capturing all the information necessary to assess the status of all barriers and deliver real time monitoring of barrier health and the overall risk posture.
Why is Safety Barrier important?
Barriers against major accidents have always been in place in the oil and gas industry, but some major hazards have led to an increased focus on how these barriers are understood and followed up by the organisation. It is important for the operating organisation to assess, understand and develop proper barrier management in order to reduce risk exposure, prevent major accidents and achieve operational excellence.
How can Safety Barrier Health Monitoring help you?
A Safety Barrier Health Monitoring system can help visualise in real time the top risks in the facility, resulting from a combination of impaired barriers functions; the top priorities for different remediation teams; plan and execute compensating measures; address compliance with the different performance standards, and in general help users assess the overall facility risk posture and take action to improve it.
What is Safety Barrier Technology?
Monitoring the real time health of all the Safety Barriers for a large facility is a complex problem unsolvable without digital technology. Calculating the health of all safety barriers for all operational areas requires knowledge of the relationships between barrier elements, barrier functions, MAH areas, physical areas, systems, performance standards and other categories. It also requires direct connection to the sources of all barrier impairment and compensating measures data. Eigen’s Safety Barrier Health Monitoring technology incorporates all these elements.
What is Real Time Risk Management?
Real time risk management is achieved when safety barrier impairment and compensating measures status are periodically updated from source systems of record, such as control systems, maintenance systems, safety incident records and training records to provide an up to date picture of the overall risk of the facility. An order of magnitude better than monthly updates of an Excel sheet!
Eigen’s Safety Barrier Health Monitoring system implements a true real time safety barrier risk management system.
What are the 5 steps in Risk Management?
Step 1. Define your Major Accident Hazard (MAH) areas
Step 2. Systematically identify your barriers and controls to develop the Bowtie diagrams.
Step 3. Define your Performance Standards
Step 4. Set up a Barrier Health Assessment system with all the information compiled; connect to sources of impairment and compensating measures
Step 5. Deploy the system, validate and assess risk in real time.
